What is the difference between Servers and Switches in a Data Center?

Post by shravan »

I’d like to add routers here too, as they are as important as switches and will make up for a better understanding of the differences between them and other devices.

Switches and routers are used to connect servers to make up a network. They are essential networking basics that enables devices inside a network to communicate with each other, as well as with other networks.

Switches are used to connect multiple devices on the same network within the data center. A switch will connect servers and create a network of shared resources, serving as a controller, allowing these devices to share information and talk to each other.
Routers, on the other hand, are used to tie multiple networks together. So, you could use a router to connect your networked servers to the internet. They will analyze the data being sent over a network, change how it’s packaged and send it to another network, or over a different type of network.
Servers are used to store data and execute tasks.
