I don't think there's much you can do on the drive itself, unless it actually has a write-protect switch like some USB sticks. Creating a file system that Windows does not understand is probably not helpful.

Those should protect your data from something like cryptologies, which will attempt to write any files it finds on any attached device. Regular viruses won't do that kind of thing, so in general attaching a USB device would be safe.
