Are there any dual CPU motherboards that are LGA 1151?

Post by suraj »

LGA 115x CPUs do not physically have the capability to work in a dual CPU setup because they lack the QPI / UPI ports and associated cache coherency logic to work in tandem with another processor.

This is in contrast to the consumer LGA 2011 / 2066 CPUs, which share almost the same socket and exactly the same silicon used in their Xeon counterparts and are theoretically capable of dual socket setups, but are locked by Intel from doing so by various means.

Note that the consumer-grade LGA-1151 CPUs again share the same piece of silicon with their Xeon brethren, but certain features are disabled such as ECC memory, Demand-and-Patrol-Scrubbing, an additional PCIe x4 port, and so on.

This is called market segmentation, and Intel uses this heavily to increase their profits.
