The most common motherboard types are ATX (requires full tower chassis), micro ATX, (mid tower) and mini-ITX (small form factor).
Here are the facts:
Motherboards come in a lot form factors.
H61 is a socket 1155 motherboard that supports the older 2nd and 3rd generation of Intel processors while H110 is a socket 1151 motherboard that supports the newer 6th and 7th generation.
However, the technology of the motherboard does not dictate its size or the number of slots it has.
Motherboards of the same generation come in different sizes to target different consumers. Whether they want to build a small sized desktop PC or a full tower 4-GPU desktop monster.
This is the Gigabyte GA-H110MSTX-HD3.
Supports 7th / 6th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors
Dual Channel DDR4 SO-DIMM, 2 DIMMs
Features USB 3.0 with USB Type-C™ Support
It comes packed with some of the latest tech but the size is so small at 14.0 cm x 14.7 cm. And this one does not have expansion slots.
Here is another Gigabyte H110 board, the GA-H110-D3.
Like the smaller one above, it sports the H110 chipset with all the same features and a lot more. As you can see it is a lot larger and supports up to 7 PCIE expansion slots, which means you would need a full tower chassis to house this baby in.
It is quite bigger coming in at 30.5 cm x 19.0 cm.
Now here we have a H61 motherboard, the GA-H61-S3.
It houses the H61 chipset and supports 2nd and 3rd generation Intel processors.
It also has 7 expansion slots and comes in at 30.5 cm x 19.0 cm but has inferior specs compared to the one above. With only support for DDR3, SATA 2, etc.
If you are purchasing a motherboard, research its specs first. You can easily google the model of the board and take a look at its detailed specifications first before you actually buy it and therefore saving you the time and effort of guessing if it will fit in your case or not.
So for example if you currently have a H61 motherboard with the ATX form factor and you are considering upgrading to an H110 system while retaining your current chassis then I suggest you look for an ATX sized H110 motherboard.
